Lady Indians split doubleheader with Colby

The 20th ranked McCook Community College softball team split a pair of home games Monday against Colby Community College. The Lady Indians won the first game 5-1 and dropped the second game 4-3.

In Game 1, MCC took advantage of five Colby errors as starting pitcher Paige Warren, (Victoria, British Columbia) improved to 19-2 on the season.

"We played a pretty good Game 1. Paige did a nice job in the circle, but couldn't make our adjustments Game 2," said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. "Their pitcher kept us off balance."

In Game 2, MCC took a 4-2 lead in the first inning but Colby scored four runs in the third inning and MCC was not able to regain the lead.

Colby goes to 25-17.

MCC goes to 38-6. The Lady Indians will be on the road for a pair of games Wednesday against the Hastings College JV team. This weekend MCC is on the road to Las Vegas, N.M. for a four-game series against Luna Community College.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 5, Colby 1: After pitching three scoreless innings to start the game, Paige Warren got the offense going in the third inning with a one-out single and she took second on an outfield error. After freshman
Josie Wright (Calgary, Alberta) walked, an infield error with two outs allowed MCC to take a 2-0 lead.

Colby immediately responded in the fourth with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Wright singled with one out in the fifth, stole second and scored on an RBI-double by freshman Lyndsay Keogh (Surrey, British Columbia). A Colby error made it 4-1 and another error with two outs put MCC up 5-1.

Warren allowed four hits, didn't allow a walk while striking out five to improve to 19-2 with her 15th complete game of the season.

MCC had five hits in the game with two each by Warren and Wright and the double by Keogh.

GAME 2 – Colby 4, McCook CC 3: Paige Warren walked to lead off the first, stole second base, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josie Wright and scored on a Lyndsay Keogh single. With two outs sophomore Marleigh Mitchell (Mission, British Columbia) singled in Keogh to put MCC up 2-0.

Colby put the first four runners on base in the third and all four scored after a walk, two singles and a two-run home run off starting pitcher Hannah Schneider (freshman, Alliance, Neb.). After two of the next three hitters reached base on a single and a walk, Hannah Schneider was relieved by Hallie Schneider (freshman, Alliance, Neb.). Hannah was charged with four runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched. Hallie got out of the inning with MCC trailing 4-2.

The Indians got one of those runs back in the third on walk by freshman Brooklyn Gillen (McCook), who scored on a Colby error for the final run of the game.

Hanna Schneider pitched the final 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and one strikeout.

"It was nice to see Hallie get some quality innings," said Mendenhall. "She gave us a chance to win, but we didn't have that clutch hit when we needed it."

MCC was held to four hits in the game with two by Mitchell and one each by Keogh and freshman Lacyn Keller (McCook).
