Lady Saints dominate MCC in Greenhouse
LIBERAL, Kan. – The McCook Community College women’s basketball team went on the road Monday night and lost 58-34 to Seward County Community College in the famed “Greenhouse.”
SCCC limited MCC to just one point in the first quarter and 12 in the second, on the way to a 30-13 lead at intermission. The Lady Indians were unable to get on track offensively.
“We were not the same team that played on Saturday,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “We had probably the worst start to a game I've been a part of as a coach.”
MCC went 0-11 from the field in the first 10 minutes, 0-for-four from the 3-point line, and just one of four from the line with eight turnovers.
“Our execution wasn't there, our energy wasn't there, we just were very flat,” said Pritchett.
Monday was Seward County’s third-straight win over a Region IX team to start the season, and first home game this year inside the vaunted Greenhouse, a green-colored gymnasium built in 1973 which claims the NJCAA record for a home winning streak – 135 games between 1995-2004. The Saints are 362-22 since 1992 – a winning percentage of .943.
“Seward was extremely physical, and we need to do a better job of playing through that,” said Pritchett.
The Lady Saints shot 33.3 percent from the field, made two of 13 triples and went 22 of 28 from the line (78.6 percent). SCCC out rebounded MCC 44-29.
MCC made 10 of 50 shots in the game (20 percent), missed all 14 shots from beyond the 3-point line and made 14 of 21 shots from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).
Freshman Brylee Minnick (Oberlin, Kan.) came off the bench to lead the Lady Indians in both and rebounds with eight of each. MCC’s starters scored 18 points with 14 rebounds. The bench scored 16 points with 12 points.
“The one bright spot in this entire mess tonight is I thought Brylee played well,” said Pritchett. “She led us in points and rebounds off the bench, and was six-for-eight from the line.”
Seward County Community College is 3-0, having started out with a pair of wins in the Otero College Classic over the weekend, downing Trinidad State 64-44 and Otero 65-26.
MCC goes to 1-1. This was the first of five straight road games.
“We have to be 100 times better on the road than at home, especially with the schedule we have coming up,” said Pritchett.
This weekend the Lady Indians travel to Wyoming to take on a pair of Region IX North opponents Friday in Cheyenne against Laramie County Community College and Saturday in Torrington, to face Eastern Wyoming.
MCC returns home Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. against Central Community College.
